"Honoring the inviolability of the old works" - on the beginnings of the controversy between the restoration and conservation of heritage properties in Bohemia around the middle of the 19th century
Alena Janatková
Zprávy památkové péče 2021, 81(2):110-114 | DOI: 10.56112/zpp.2021.2.03
The Czech article "Preserving antique heritage properties, especially architectural heritage properties", which was transferred from the French milieu to the Czech environment around the middle of the 19th century, addressed the issue of respect for the originality of a work. Through the requirement of preservation, which also shows the practical limits of the justified protection of heritage properties, it confronts the work of František Schmoranz Sr. as a preservationist in the Chrudim region with the fundamental question of whether to restore or preserve heritage properties.
The work of František Schmoranz Sr. in the context of purist heritage care in Vysoké Mýto
Vojtěch Barcal
Zprávy památkové péče 2021, 81(2):115-123 | DOI: 10.56112/zpp.2021.2.04
The present appearance of the picturesque and rugged panorama of the historical center of Vysoké Mýto with its numerous towers is, to a significant degree, also the work of architect and preservationist František Schmoranz. It was he who gave two of the city's most important heritage properties and landmarks their present appearance, namely the Prague Gate and, largely, the Church of St. Lawrence. Both of these medieval structures needed repair, having been only temporarily repaired after several fires. This article presents the Vysoké Mýto work of František Schmoranz and its historical background; it also evaluates the pros and cons of the work through...

Zprávy památkové péče 2021, 81(2):124-137 | DOI: 10.56112/zpp.2021.2.05
The reconstruction of the Gothic St. Lawrence Church, which took place from 1875 to 1911 mainly under the direction of architects František Schmoranz Sr. and Josef Mocker, was probably the largest municipally funded event of the period. With this reconstruction, Vysoké Mýto became another of the "rural" Czech and Moravian towns that decided to restore its medieval churches in a monumental way. Efforts to repair the local medieval landmarks (not only the local church), as well as the effort to restore them to their original monumentality and splendor, grew out of the broad consensus among the inhabitants regarding the meaningfulness of such an event....
František Schmoranz Jr. (1845-1892): apostle of orientalism and pioneer of the art industry in Bohemia
Milan Němeček
Zprávy památkové péče 2021, 81(2):138-150 | DOI: 10.56112/zpp.2021.2.06
František Schmoranz Jr. was an architect, artist, pedagogue, construction entrepreneur and, above all, an expert on the architecture and culture of the Orient. He also founded the School of Applied Arts in Prague. Although he was a well-known personality during his lifetime, even beyond the borders of his country, there are still many misconceptions that surround his life. He left an admirable amount of work, but no memories or biography have been preserved, and his legacy has received no attention, in the belief that there existed only one František Schmoranz. That is why this article draws from many years of source research to rehabilitate the work...

Jan Galeta
Zprávy památkové péče 2021, 81(2):151-159 | DOI: 10.56112/zpp.2021.2.07
The presented study focuses on the fate of architects who were active around 1900 in Moravská Ostrava, i.e. in an industrial center that was still on the periphery of architecture and art. Case studies focusing on the life and works of Otto Wagner's students - Karl Benirschke, and Otokar Bém, as well as of Vienna Polytechnic graduate Felix Neumann, Prague student Bohumil Židlický and their colleague František Tichý, aim to explore the relationship between architects employed in local architectural offices and their employers. A key contribution to this issue is Felix Neumann's dispute with his employee Hermann Müller; this dispute took place in court...

Jana Marešová
Zprávy památkové péče 2021, 81(2):160-167 | DOI: 10.56112/zpp.2021.2.08
The article is devoted to the Schwarzenberg architect Jan Sedláček (1848-1916) who, along with other personalities working for the Schwarzenbergs, is responsible for the specific appearance of the South Bohemian landscape. He was responsible for the reconstruction of churches in Hosín, Netolice, Bavorov, and many others, as well as for municipal buildings in Třeboň, Chýnov and Protivín. Towards the end of his service and especially after retiring, he worked with the Schwarzenberg archivist František Mareš on creating a list of heritage properties in the South Bohemian region. The article also uses studied written sources to map his views and attitudes...
Technically educated professionals in Imperial and Royal heritage care in the second half of the 19th century
Marek Krejčí
Zprávy památkové péče 2021, 81(2):168-174 | DOI: 10.56112/zpp.2021.2.09
František Schmoranz Sr. was one of the first appointed preservationists of the Imperial and Royal Central Commission for the Resarch and Preservation of Architectural Heritage Properties. His examination of the socio-professional composition of the first preservationist body led him to question the minimum representation of technicians. More detailed research revealed that the staff of the provincial construction directorates were obliged by special instruction to provide professional technical support to preservationists. Preservationists were therefore initially appointed by technicians only exceptionally: two municipal builders (including František...
František Schmoranz Jr.'s contribution to the study of stucco decoration of the Hvězda Summer Palace
Pavla Mikešová
Zprávy památkové péče 2021, 81(2):175-181 | DOI: 10.56112/zpp.2021.2.10
The article evaluates the co-authorship of František Schmoranz Jr. on the first printed plans of the underground and the ground floor with outlined compositions of the ceilings of the Hvězda Summer Palace which was published in 1872 by Wilhelm Lübke. The text presents previously unexplored charcoal drawings by František Schmoranz Jr. preserved in the State Regional Archive in Chrudim, which capture the stucco decoration on the ground floor of the Summer Palace; it also analyzes the purpose for which these studies could serve. Schmoranz's drawings of the Hvězda Summer Palace stucco work are among the first documents of "Czech" professional interest...

Pavla Cenková
Zprávy památkové péče 2021, 81(2):182-200 | DOI: 10.56112/zpp.2021.2.11
The paper focuses on a standardized colony of family houses built in Brno-Maloměřice in the years 1923-1924 based on the designs of architects Karel Kotas and Bohuslav Fuchs. Both of these important protagonists of the Brno interwar architectural scene thus became involved in solving the issue of the lack of housing in the city of Brno and the search for an optimal type of modern and affordable individual housing. Using detailed archival searches, including some hitherto neglected sources, the article brings valuable and hitherto unknown knowledge on the origin and history of the colony. After a short introduction summarizing the existing publications...
Field identification of World War II activities in the cadastral areas of Branka, Hradec nad Moravicí, Raduň, and the surrounding area using non-destructive archaeological methods, their mapping, and proposal for protection in the landscape using the example of the situation in Hradec nad Moravicí - Jakubčovice
Jiří Juchelka, Ondřej Klápa
Zprávy památkové péče 2021, 81(2):201-222 | DOI: 10.56112/zpp.2021.2.12
The article presents the results of non-destructive archaeological research in the vicinity of the village of Jakubčovice (a suburban area of Hradec nad Moravicí) in the identification and study of wartime activities during World War II in the retreat area of the Wehrmacht troops. Three separate locations were selected in the Jakubčovice cadaster in which non-destructive archaeological methods were applied in the identification of anthropogenic terrain relics. The objective was to measure all visually visible trenches, to survey the area using metal detectors, and to enter individual discovery sites into a spatial context map. Based on the data thus...
