The work of František Schmoranz Sr. in the context of purist heritage care in Vysoké Mýto

The present appearance of the picturesque and rugged panorama of the historical center of Vysoké Mýto with its numerous towers is, to a significant degree, also the work of architect and preservationist František Schmoranz. It was he who gave two of the city's most important heritage properties and landmarks their present appearance, namely the Prague Gate and, largely, the Church of St. Lawrence. Both of these medieval structures needed repair, having been only temporarily repaired after several fires. This article presents the Vysoké Mýto work of František Schmoranz and its historical background; it also evaluates the pros and cons of the work through the perspective of modern heritage care, the aesthetic execution of the structural modifications, and their place in the panorama of Vysoké Mýto. It also presents available historical sources and literature on the issue of building modifications performed on the Church of St. Lawrence and the Prague Gate.
