Ad fontes: the importance of archival materials in the concept of the use of fortifications, subsequent design, construction work, and maintenance on the example of the Terezín fortress

Jiří Hofman

Zprávy památkové péče 2021, 81(3):243-251 | DOI: 10.56112/zpp.2021.3.02

The article deals with archives for the building development of 18th century fortresses preserved in the Czech and Austrian archives and, using specific examples from the Terezín fortress, demonstrates how to work with them. These are generally known building plans as well as hitherto neglected file materials concerning the materials used, the technological procedures, the purpose of using individual structures, and the complications associated with it. The question is not only about what kind of information is available, but also how to work with it in order to avoid inappropriate misinterpretations which may be reflected in heritage restorations...

The Small Fortress in Terezín and its repair in 2011-2019

Karel Kibic

Zprávy památkové péče 2021, 81(3):252-262 | DOI: 10.56112/zpp.2021.3.03

The article addresses the restoration of the escarp of the main rampart of the Small Fortress in Terezín which took place in 2011-2019. In this context it raises more general questions concerning the approach of heritage property care and professional supervision in the restoration of modern bastion fortresses. The quality of heritage property supervision can be significantly affected by a good knowledge of the issue. The article suggests a certain way of understanding Modern Age fortification systems, and against the background of the description of the Small Fortress it attempts to explain the basic terminology. The second part of the article is...

Jan Maloušek, Markéta Fialová

Zprávy památkové péče 2021, 81(3):263-272 | DOI: 10.56112/zpp.2021.3.04

The text summarizes selected findings from the course of building renovation of certain fortification elements of early modern Prague fortifications from recent years. Emphasis is placed not only on the actual construction work, but also on the pre-project preparation; this is evidenced by nominal practical knowledge which is often acquired by searching for not entirely common or even undesirable procedures. According to the authors, the aim of the effort should always and primarily be the preservation of the architectural property, secondly the preservation of its material heritage essence, and thirdly the extension of its lifespan. While working...

Jolana Tothová, Jiří Smutný, Josef Řehák

Zprávy památkové péče 2021, 81(3):273-280 | DOI: 10.56112/zpp.2021.3.05

After the floods in 2002, as part of the damage caused to the Terezín Main Fortress, the provision of an underground system under built-up areas, civic amenities, and main roads had to be addressed as a matter of priority. This resulted in the creation of basic technology that stabilized the underground corridors. It was only after the flood in 2013, however, that a complete survey of the western and northern sections was undertaken and project documentation for its overall stabilization was created. The article presents basic experience with the realization of the overall stabilization of the underground mine tunnels and the fortification walls of...

Jan Havrda, Jaroslav Podliska

Zprávy památkové péče 2021, 81(3):281-293 | DOI: 10.56112/zpp.2021.3.06

The article summarizes basic data on the heritage value of the historical underground of one of the most important squares in Prague. Information on this summary is provided by several dozen salvage archaeological excavations carried out in its immediate area or in the vicinity. The underground of the square (archaeological stratified formation and other components such as buildings, structures, graves, etc.) is of high heritage value and contains a wealth of important information about not only the emergence of the high medieval public area with its buildings, but also about significantly older heritage properties that precede the origin of the city...

The oldest depiction and map of Levice

Matúš Martinák

Zprávy památkové péče 2021, 81(3):294-301 | DOI: 10.56112/zpp.2021.3.07

In 1574, Paolo Angielini compiled a representative atlas containing maps, plans, and depictions of Hungarian and Croatian anti-Turkish fortresses. The atlas was a copy of an older version compiled by Natale Angielieni for the Court Military Council in Vienna. One of the localities shown from the territory of today's southwestern Slovakia was Levice and included a castle and a fortified part of town. Based on a building historical and historical analysis, the faithfully depicted appearance of Levice can be dated to approximately the years 1560 to 1570. Its authenticity, as shown by earlier and newer heritage research, is also important in relation to...

Květa Jordánová, Martina Indrová

Zprávy památkové péče 2021, 81(3):302-309 | DOI: 10.56112/zpp.2021.3.08

The article deals with the development of principles and approaches in the creation of guide texts in heritage properties, especially in the period of the second half of the 20th century. It also monitors the fundamental factors that influenced both the content of syllabi and their formal form. It deals with the effects of changes after the Velvet Revolution in the field of reworking guide texts, where problematic and misleading passages were often only omitted or replaced with new ones without a broader context or additional explanation. The study also briefly reflects on the current situation in connection with the in-depth analysis of currently...

Matyáš Kracík, Anna Schránilová

Zprávy památkové péče 2021, 81(3):310-326 | DOI: 10.56112/zpp.2021.3.09

The study is the second part of a miniseries dealing with the history, architecture, and heritage potential of the Prague metro. Chronologically, it follows up on the first part dealing with the oldest section of metro C (Florenc - Kačerov) opened in 1974. The text deals with the second and third stages of the construction of the Prague metro, completed in 1980, when it reached a length of 20 km. These are the first two sections of route A and the second section of route C. The new deep line A passing through the historic city center was architecturally very beneficial. Route II. C connected the city center with the largest housing estate in Prague,...

Zprávy památkové péče 2021, 81(3):327-344 | DOI: 10.56112/zpp.2021.3.10

The article summarizes the results of research into the construction of historic buildings for the production of glass and their complexes in Central Bohemia. Defunct glassworks, both archaeologized and preserved, as well as glassworks still in operation were the focus of professional interest. Chronologically, the subject of research is defined as between the establishment of the oldest clearly documented glassworks at the beginning of the modern age and fundamental socio-economic changes in the middle of the 20th century. The article also includes a brief historical introduction to the history of glassmaking in the defined area, as well as an evaluation...

Railway architecture, historical and contemporary. Between the limits of protection and modernization

Alena Borovcová

Zprávy památkové péče 2021, 81(3):345-353 | DOI: 10.56112/zpp.2021.3.11

In its methodological approach to the evaluation of preserved buildings and technical equipment, heritage care seeks to responsibly select representatives of individual functional types, stylistic periods or structures that characterize the projection of a particular railway company into the Central List of Cultural Heritage Properties of the Czech republic. The owner and operator of railway transport is motivated by economic considerations when managing an extensive building fund. Both perspectives present the public interest. The aim of the article is to appeal to the mutual dialogue of both parties. The main thesis of the article is that not all...

Vít Jesenský

Zprávy památkové péče 2021, 81(3):372-380 | DOI: 10.56112/zpp.2021.3.13

Critical heritage studies are a sovereign dynamic multidisciplinary field that deals with the concept of cultural heritage as a social process formed by communities and socio-political power. Despite the closeness of their objectives, the mutual discourse with heritage care as such is not very developed, and not only in the Czech Republic. The aim of this article is to identify and analyze part of the issues and outputs of heritage studies that may be beneficial or stimulating for the practice and theory of heritage care and to indicate the obstacles to such use. It draws attention to differences in the concept of cultural heritage and heritage properties,...
