Woody plants of Nymburk cemeteries in the Central European context

The study focuses on the neglected issue of trees in cemeteries. Basic field research was carried out within the Nymburkdistrict, but other districts in Central Europe (Poland, Austria, and Hungary) were chosen for comparison. Although it is a wellknown fact that sanitary, operational, and legislative changes have significantly influenced the appearance of cemeteries, the vegetation component, and especially the woody plants, are still marginal (in contrast to the stone production). The term “Czechoslovak restoration school”, which has been used in different variations and with different emphasis by both art historians and restorers, was postulated by the recently deceased Ivo Hlobil in a unique contribution from 1982. The scholar later published the text several more times with minor, almost imperceptible to most, but substantial changes. At least this fact shows that the topic was very alive for him and continued to occupy his thoughts. The restorer Aleš Rozehnal (1925-1995) is a personality who has made his mark in art historical circles as a restorer workingon the restoration of the Přemyslid Palace in Olomouc, now known as the Palace of Bishop Zdík. He worked on the restorationfrom the early 1970s until the monument was opened to the public in 1988. Its main focus was the restoration of the richly decorated Romanesque windows.
