The set of buildings of the Czechoslovak Embassy in Beijing. Representation of the state and conservation

This study presents the circumstances of the creation, the final form, and further fate of the Czechoslovak Embassy in Beijing
in the context of the representation of the state and the monumental values of “state” architecture. The text is based primarily on thorough research of sources in the Archives of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Czech Republic, the State Regional Archives in Prague, and the National Technical Museum. Through a detailed analysis of the process of securing the design and its subsequent development, it illustrates the close interconnection between architecture and politics as well as the shaping of the state apparatus’ demands for state representation during a period of shifting ideological and architectural discourse. The final section thematizing monumental aspects also draws on contemporary statements by state representatives and recent journalistic outputs. The study also highlights the significant influence of particularly economic aspects on the state’s requirements and the work of the designers, as well as the rather passive approach of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to the monumental values of embassy buildings from the post-war period. Apart from describing the role of architecture as a tool of political leadership of the country and at the same time the possibilities of autonomous expression of architects promptly reacting to external stimuli, its contribution lies in turning the public’s attention to the building or buildings located outside the domestic field of vision.
