Instrumentalization of heritage conservation in the Czech lands in the second half of the 1940s and 1950s

Kristina Uhlíková, Michal Sklenář

Zprávy památkové péče 2022, 82(1):3-16 | DOI: 10.56112/zpp.2022.1.02

State heritage care in Czechoslovakia after the Second World War was confronted with tasks incomparably more complex and demanding than in the previous period. The transfer of most heritage properties from private to state ownership offered a previously unimaginable opportunity to significantly influence their maintenance and use. At the same time, however, conservationists had to look on, virtually helplessly, at the devastation of a number of other valuable heritage properties, even at the targeted and widespread devastation in the case of the border zone or the North Bohemian brown coal basin. The role of the state changed dramatically, not only...

Legacy of the one-armed commander in the shadow of the red star: the conservation of burial monuments from the Austro-Prussian War in Hradec Králové between 1948 and 1989

Vojtěch Kessler, Josef Šrámek

Zprávy památkové péče 2022, 82(1):17-30 | DOI: 10.56112/zpp.2022.1.03

The unique collection of funerary and sepulchral sculptures represented by heritage properties from the War of 1866 has never been the subject of research and management by an official (legal) heritage institution. One of the reasons for this was the existence of a traditional and influential civic initiative in the form of the Society for the Preservation of War Monuments on the Hradec Králové Battlefield. From its foundation, this association was personally associated with conservation experts, restorers, artists, and historians, as well as with local elites; this enabled it to survive after 1918 and even after 1939. In the early 1950s, the Society...

Josef Pošmourný - architect in the gears of time

Marek Krejčí

Zprávy památkové péče 2022, 82(1):31-37 | DOI: 10.56112/zpp.2022.1.04

The article focuses on the personality of the architect-conservator Josef Pošmourný, who was unjustly imprisoned in the early 1960s. The evaluation of archival funds of state administration bodies, security forces and the judiciary documents especially the circumstances of the failed government task of regenerating the urban conservation zone in Cheb as a new regional centre of the West Bohemian border region. The trial of Pošmourný and Professor Oldřich Stefan diverted attention from the real causes of the failure of the whole project, while serving as an exemplary example of the punishment of respected professionals who refused to adapt the professional...

Heritage properties and security - interest, or lack thereof?

Milan Bárta

Zprávy památkové péče 2022, 82(1):38-46 | DOI: 10.56112/zpp.2022.1.05

1948 to 1989, Czechoslovak State Security formed one of the main pillars of the communist regime with which it was closely linked. Its approach to heritage properties therefore largely reflected the attitudes of the ruling party elite. Several themes can be focused on in this context. An effort can be made here to determine how the issues were reflected in the practical activities of the security forces. Their scope of competence included, in particular, the search for stolen objects from heritage sites and their possible export abroad. Another aspect is how historically important or protected buildings or their furnishings were used by parts of Czechoslovak...

Ecclesiastical conservation in the second half of the 20th century with a focus on the Olomouc Archdiocese

Jitka Jonová

Zprávy památkové péče 2022, 82(1):47-54 | DOI: 10.56112/zpp.2022.1.06

This article deals with the period after 1949, when the state took over supervision of the management of church property, including movable and immovable heritage properties. The existing Archdiocesan Heritage Council ceased to function, although the Sacrosanctum Concilium called for the establishment of a diocesan commission for sacred art. The restoration of many sacred buildings was carried out on a self-help basis, and similarly the modification of liturgical space in the context of introduced liturgical reform could not be sufficiently consulted. The Ordinaries did issue their official opinion, but the consultation was complicated. In Olomouc,...

Hugo Doskočil - priest and "diocesan conservator" in Hradec Králové. A contribution to the changes in the church and state care of sacral heritage properties in the first half of the 20th century

Ladislav Holoubek, Michal Sklenář

Zprávy památkové péče 2022, 82(1):55-64 | DOI: 10.56112/zpp.2022.1.07

Hugo Doskočil (1875-1961) was one of the persons who in the first half of the 20th century successfully combined his ecclesiastical career with his work in the profane environment. He was a priest, a graduate of studies in Rome and Vienna, and was one of the leading figures of the Hradec Králové diocese: he worked closely with the bishops as a ceremonialist, as rector of the seminary, taught at the theological school, and held many other positions. He achieved recognition within the Church, but also received recognition outside the Church. Throughout the interwar period, he held the position of state conservator for the Hradec Králové district, corresponded...

The villa as a prototype. Dresden office of Lossow & Kühne and "typified projects" of villa architecture in North Bohemia

Alena Řičánková, Jaroslav Zeman

Zprávy památkové péče 2022, 82(1):65-76 | DOI: 10.56112/zpp.2022.1.08

The article traces the work of the Dresden studio of Lossow & Kühne whose numerous projects can also be found in North Bohemia, due to, among other things, the existence of the only branch of the studio outside Germany, opened in Liberec in 1925. The focus is particularly on a detailed analysis of family housing, especially villa architecture, whose investors came from the high social classes, often industrialists of Jewish origin. This generation longed for individual housing that not only provided sufficient comfort and practicality, but also met the requirements of representation. The ideal combination was the rediscovered villa building type...

Anežka Mikulcová

Zprávy památkové péče 2022, 82(1):77-87 | DOI: 10.56112/zpp.2022.1.09

The submitted article reflects the final stage of the restoration of the main restoration efforts of the Veltrusy State Chateau completed in the middle of 2021, which mainly included restoration works in the interiors. The aim of this article is to highlight the completion of the heritage property restoration lasting almost two decades, to introduce the wider public to the varied issues of restoration interventions that brought with them new research, findings and innovative technological solutions, and also to open the topic of complex restoration of a period interior, which brings with it a number of methodological issues. The text is divided into...

Methods of moisture measurement in historical masonry with examples of use on archaeological sites under the 3rd courtyard of Prague Castle

Tomáš Weiss, Kateřina Kalianková, Martin Slavík, Jakub Mareš, Jana Maříková-Kubková, Jan Válek

Zprávy památkové péče 2022, 82(1):88-96 | DOI: 10.56112/zpp.2022.1.10

The degradation of masonry of historically valuable structures is often linked to the presence of moisture which then affects saline, frost, and biogenic weathering or swelling of clay minerals. The article presents the use of selected methods for monitoring the presence of water in heritage properties, with emphasis on the use of these methods in conservation, summarizing their principles, advantages, disadvantages, and the possibilities of combining them. The selected methods (resistive, electromagnetic, infrared, probe using reactive dye) are presented and critically evaluated using a case study of moisture monitoring in the archaeological area...
