The villa as a prototype. Dresden office of Lossow & Kühne and "typified projects" of villa architecture in North Bohemia

The article traces the work of the Dresden studio of Lossow & Kühne whose numerous projects can also be found in North Bohemia, due to, among other things, the existence of the only branch of the studio outside Germany, opened in Liberec in 1925. The focus is particularly on a detailed analysis of family housing, especially villa architecture, whose investors came from the high social classes, often industrialists of Jewish origin. This generation longed for individual housing that not only provided sufficient comfort and practicality, but also met the requirements of representation. The ideal combination was the rediscovered villa building type which at the same time embodied an attractive and desirable architectural assignment. A study of the studio's projects shows that in the 1920s the authors arrived at a prototype, inspired by the Baroque chateau, which they subsequently varied for different builders. This design method can also be considered as contemporary, since we can speak of a building group derived from a basic, standardised type. The design can be modified in various ways to satisfy a distinct demand while maintaining the unifying (and at first sight recognisable) character of the buildings and the author's signature style. However, the architectural and craftsmanship qualities of the group of interwar villas under study are perceived by the authors of the article as endangered, also due to the lack of heritage property protection. The submitted article is based on Jaroslav Zeman's study Between tradition and modernity - the work of the Lossow & Kühne studio in North Bohemia (Fontes Nissae, 2011, pp. 131-184), but focuses primarily on individual housing projects.
