Looking back at the discussion on the restoration of the Clam-Gallas Palace in Prague
Tadeáš Kadlec
Zprávy památkové péče 2024, 84(4):439-443
The results of the recent renovation of the Clam-Gallas Palace in Prague have raised many question marks among the professional public and at the same time stimulated a broader debate, which has also had a significant impact on the public and media space. The article provides a brief summary of the course of this expert discussion so far.
Restoration of the front and other facades of the Clam-Gallas Palace. The procedure and findings
Jan Maloušek
Zprávy památkové péče 2024, 84(4):444-458 | DOI: 10.56112/zpp.2024.4.01
The article summarizes the process of pre-project preparation and the knowledge about the development of the facades of the Clam-Gallas Palace in the Old Town of Prague acquired during their last restoration. The emphasis is on the synthesis of partial knowledge and its influence on the formation of the final form of the architectural design, which is perceived as controversial by at least part of the professional public. The execution of these works has led to a significant change in the experienced form of the building. However, the new look is, at least in my opinion, better based on an understanding of the historical development of the building....
Treatment of stone sculptures with coatings – the most challenging step of restoration or its replacement?
Petr Kuneš
Zprávy památkové péče 2024, 84(4):459-473 | DOI: 10.56112/zpp.2024.4.02
The paper deals with the methodological and technological issues of providing historical, mostly sandstone sculptural works in the exterior with surface coatings. Although the treatment of the surface with a covering painting is a possible legitimate way of sculpture restoration in specific cases, there has been a growing tendency to approach the surface of these works in a similar way to a conventional plastered façade in Czech Republic in recent decades. The recent extensive restoration of the Clam-Gallas Palace in Prague, which as part of the overall reshaping of the colour architectural layout of the façade, coated the monumental portals and unique...
Ongoing change in the discourse of conservation? The recent restoration of the portals of the Clam-Gallas Palace in Prague and its result
Viktor Kovařík
Zprávy památkové péče 2024, 84(4):474-482 | DOI: 10.56112/zpp.2024.4.03
The article focuses on the current issue of surface treatments of stone material in the Czech environment, using the specific example of the recent controversial restoration of the sculptural decoration of both portals of the Clam-Gallas Palace in Prague. It seems that the general understanding of a certain area of the field of heritage conservation is currently changing again, or is not uniform, which is the problem of individuals seeing different meanings under similar terms and concepts. The article therefore focuses in a broader context on the result of the restoration intervention on the sculptural decoration of M. B. Braun after the application...
On the question of the concept of restoration of the stone sculptures on the main facade of the Clam-Gallas Palace
Kateřina Adamcová
Zprávy památkové péče 2024, 84(4):483-494 | DOI: 10.56112/zpp.2024.4.04
The article focuses on one of the most controversial moments of the recent monumental restoration of the Clam-Gallas Palace in Prague, namely the method of repair of the main facade. It considers that the concept of the main facade repair did not take into account the fact that this facade is not only the work of the architect Johann Bernard Fischer von Erlach, but also the work of the sculptor Matthias Bernard Braun. The first part of the article is devoted to an art-historical analysis of the individual components of the rich sculptural decoration of the facade from the perspective of current research and presents some hitherto unknown or insufficiently considered...
Heritage conservation and colour of buildings
Petr Macek
Zprávy památkové péče 2024, 84(4):495-516 | DOI: 10.56112/zpp.2024.4.05
The text deals with the issue of colour in the facades of historic buildings in the context of heritage conservation from the perspective of a practical conservationist. Using the example of the Clam-Gallas Palace and other case studies, the author critically analyses approaches to colour restoration, which often lack support in historical research and are subject to aesthetic or period-specific decisions. He questions mechanical attempts to restore the „original“ appearance of buildings and points out the risks of uniform aesthetic preferences. At the heart of the author‘s reflection is the question of whether colour should be understood...
Restoration work and new findings in the interiors of the Clam-Gallas Palace in Prague
Petra Hoftichová
Zprávy památkové péče 2024, 84(4):517-538 | DOI: 10.56112/zpp.2024.4.06
The article analyses the restoration procedures and the development of approaches to the restoration of the Clam-Gallas Palace, based primarily on materials from the Czech National Heritage Institute (NPÚ) and restoration reports available since the 1980s. In addition, photodocumentation has been used for younger interventions, including records of the most recent reconstruction after 2018. The author presents the genesis of the construction of the palace and a brief history of the building, as well as any alterations and renovations that the building has undergone during its history. The article thus identifies the main problems that have affected...
On the possibilities of visual rehabilitation of murals. Glosses on the background of the current reconstruction of Carlo Innocenzo Carloni’s paintings on the staircase of the Clam-Gallas Palace in Prague
Adam Pokorný, Petr Skalický
Zprávy památkové péče 2024, 84(4):539-551 | DOI: 10.56112/zpp.2024.4.07
The final state of the recently restored wall paintings on the staircase of the Clam-Gallas Palace in Prague provoked somewhat embarrassed reactions. The concept of the approach and the time set aside for the realization, however, are certainly not unique or random in domestic practice. It is therefore worth noting the background of the ideological foundations of the concept as well as the social conditions, especially the procurement methods under which we are forced to carry out the restoration of important works. A detailed retrospective reflection of the restoration work carried out does not provide for the future search for solutions. What is...
Falsifying reconstructions of Carlo Innocenzo Carloni’s wallpaintings in the Clam-Gallas Palace in Prague as a symptomatic phenomenon of the state of conservation?
Jana Zapletalová
Zprávy památkové péče 2024, 84(4):552-561 | DOI: 10.56112/zpp.2024.4.08
The article reflects the recent restoration work on the recently uncovered murals by the important Italian painter Carlo Innocenzo Carloni on the walls of the stair hall of the Clam-Gallas Palace in Prague. The text focuses on the issues of determining the concept of the intervention, the restoration proposal, the binding opinion, the quality of the implementation by the restoration contractors, the monument supervision and the restoration report. On the basis of an analysis of information on procedural procedures, reconstruction of the sequence of events and evaluation of photographic documentation and the physical condition of the paintings from...
Frsco painting and the problem od (re)construction of artistic values
Martin Mádl
Zprávy památkové péče 2024, 84(4):562-564 | DOI: 10.56112/zpp.2024.4.09
Art historical interpretation seeks a strategy that helps to explain a work in some broader historical, cultural, social or other more general context. However, this interpretation only takes into account certain aspects of works of art. Art historians typically focus on iconography, stylistic aspects, and the cultural, historical, and social context of the artworks‘ creation. However, they often overlook their technical and technological specificities and authentic structure, even though suitable tools for interpretation can be found in contemporary literature, among other sources, as we show with the example of Baroque wall paintings. The overriding...
