The beginnings of the renewal of the liturgy after the Second Vatican Council using the example of the artistic commission of the Brno diocese

Tomáš Řepa

Zprávy památkové péče 2023, 83(2):103-112 | DOI: 10.56112/zpp.2023.2.01

The text deals with the very beginnings of the acceptance of the conclusions of the Second Vatican Council in the Czech ecclesiastical environment. It is based on the rich archival collections of the Bishop’s Consistory in Brno and covers a short period in the second half of the 1960s. The text specifies the various methodological steps by which the Brno diocese set up a system of liturgical commissions, more precisely commissions that dealt with questions of art and architecture. The archival collections also show that the Brno diocese was in close contact with the conservation authorities when the church reforms were introduced, and it is also...

The work of goldsmiths of Brno provenance for the Church in the Baroque period

Anna Grossová

Zprávy památkové péče 2023, 83(2):113-128 | DOI: 10.56112/zpp.2023.2.02

The text presents partial results of a multi-year survey of the monuments of Baroque goldsmithing in the historical territory of Moravia, simultaneously supplemented by archival research, aimed at a more detailed understanding of sacral objects in the possession of the Roman Catholic Church made of precious metals, which are declared cultural monuments of the Czech Republic. An unforeseen bonus was also the discovery of the works of several Moravian masters whose entire oeuvre had been considered lost forever or whose names had not yet been mentioned in the literature. Most of the objects examined represent the enduring quality of Moravian goldsmithing...

Fortress of ideal living. Residential construction in Brno – Černá Pole in 1919–1925

Pavla Cenková, Aleš Homola

Zprávy památkové péče 2023, 83(2):129-146 | DOI: 10.56112/zpp.2023.2.03

The article is devoted to the building of Brno’s Černá Pole district as an ideal area for middle-class housing in the first half of the 1920s. This process was a continuation of the previous Gründer building phase, whose beginnings date back to the end of the 19th century and continued in the second half of the 20th century and in the 1930s, when the district was completed. The activities of Czech and German building cooperatives, bringing together ethnically segregated but also ethnically mixed groups of builders from the middle strata of society, were decisive for the development of Černá Pole at this time. The building cooperatives hired designers...

Fruit trees in Černošice resort town using the example of Jan Funda’s garden

Stanislav Svoboda

Zprávy památkové péče 2023, 83(2):147-158 | DOI: 10.56112/zpp.2023.2.04

The study complements the recently published (in Czech) Summer Residence of Prague Inhabitants, Černošice, and Villa Architecture of the 19th and 20th Centuries. The research also focused on the neglected topic of the fruit trees which have almost always been a part of the local gardens. Unlike the ornamental trees, however, they have rarely been of interest to the public or to later owners. In the course of field research and discussions with the owners of the gardens, who were often descendants of the original builders, a number of hitherto unknown sources were found which have greatly enriched the knowledge of the fruit trees and of fruit growing...

Historical windows and energy performance: the case of Modernist architecture

Alexander Kuric, Kristýna Schulzová

Zprávy památkové péče 2023, 83(2):159-175 | DOI: 10.56112/zpp.2023.2.05

Historical windows are under pressure in the current environment of tightening energy performance requirements, resulting in many cases in widespread replacement with new windows. Monuments of modernist architecture, where windows are an exceptional carrier of not only historical but also aesthetic value, are particularly vulnerable to this trend. The aim of this paper is to investigate the thermal insulation properties of typical modernist windows in more detail and to examine the effectiveness of additional measures to improve them. To do so, we use model-based software calculations combined with thermal imaging. From the point of view of the first...

Risks and limits of using cleaning pastes in sandstone treatment

Jakub Ďoubal, Karol Bayer

Zprávy památkové péče 2023, 83(2):176-184 | DOI: 10.56112/zpp.2023.2.06

The aim of this article is to mention the risks associated with the use of ammonium hydrogen difluoride-based cleaning pastes on quartz sandstone and especially on sculptural works. Chemical cleaning with ammonium hydrogen difluoride or other soluble fluoride-based pastes is still a relatively common method in common restoration practice. The main reason for this is the ease and speed of application and thus the economic advantage, which plays an important role in a situation where price is often the only criterion for choosing a supplier. However, these advantages are offset by the low controllability of the process (uneven cleaning and risk of overcleaning),...
