Fortress of ideal living. Residential construction in Brno – Černá Pole in 1919–1925

The article is devoted to the building of Brno’s Černá Pole district as an ideal area for middle-class housing in the first half of the 1920s. This process was a continuation of the previous Gründer building phase, whose beginnings date back to the end of the 19th century and continued in the second half of the 20th century and in the 1930s, when the district was completed. The activities of Czech and German building cooperatives, bringing together ethnically segregated but also ethnically mixed groups of builders from the middle strata of society, were decisive for the development of Černá Pole at this time. The building cooperatives hired designers or architectural consultants for their enterprises who imprinted the newly built houses with characteristic features, the most prominent of which were the many variations of the designs of standard houses by the architect Vinzenz Baier. The cooperative urban planning efforts of the interwar period gave rise to a network of orthogonally and radially composed residential streets of extraordinary quality which are still among the most attractive residential zones in Brno today.
