Renovation of the piano nobile and restoration of the main hall of Veltrusy Chateau

The submitted article reflects the final stage of the restoration of the main restoration efforts of the Veltrusy State Chateau completed in the middle of 2021, which mainly included restoration works in the interiors. The aim of this article is to highlight the completion of the heritage property restoration lasting almost two decades, to introduce the wider public to the varied issues of restoration interventions that brought with them new research, findings and innovative technological solutions, and also to open the topic of complex restoration of a period interior, which brings with it a number of methodological issues. The text is divided into two parts; an introductory overview highlighting the most interesting aspects of the restoration work carried out, and a section dealing in more detail with the restoration of the main hall of the castle, preceded by a discussion of the overall approach to the restoration of the space as a whole. The article introduces the reader to the context and professional aspects of the restoration interventions, draws attention to the mistakenly assumed authorship of the ceiling paintings, and encourages the reader to reflect on the specific intervention into the appearances of historical buildings in the form of a complex restoration of a multi-layered historical interior.
