The Small Fortress in Terezín and its repair in 2011-2019

The article addresses the restoration of the escarp of the main rampart of the Small Fortress in Terezín which took place in 2011-2019. In this context it raises more general questions concerning the approach of heritage property care and professional supervision in the restoration of modern bastion fortresses. The quality of heritage property supervision can be significantly affected by a good knowledge of the issue. The article suggests a certain way of understanding Modern Age fortification systems, and against the background of the description of the Small Fortress it attempts to explain the basic terminology. The second part of the article is a specific description of the restoration performed and the problems that occurred during it. When repairing Baroque fortresses, for example, there are repeated difficulties with a lack of supply of suitable bricks. During the repair, there were also several necessary reconstruction interventions which clearly demonstrate the possibilities and pitfalls of the reconstruction approach.
