Ad fontes: the importance of archival materials in the concept of the use of fortifications, subsequent design, construction work, and maintenance on the example of the Terezín fortress

The article deals with archives for the building development of 18th century fortresses preserved in the Czech and Austrian archives and, using specific examples from the Terezín fortress, demonstrates how to work with them. These are generally known building plans as well as hitherto neglected file materials concerning the materials used, the technological procedures, the purpose of using individual structures, and the complications associated with it. The question is not only about what kind of information is available, but also how to work with it in order to avoid inappropriate misinterpretations which may be reflected in heritage restorations of the fortress architecture. The article concludes with a proposal for interdisciplinary cooperation as a prerequisite for the successful restoration of fortress heritage properties that is based primarily on mutual cooperation between historian and architect/conservationist as well as on a combination of well-executed building historical research together with research of archival sources.
