Former paper mills in the Sušice area - a thesis of ongoing research
Michal Rys
Zprávy památkové péče 2013, 73(5):379-383
As part of the ongoing initial phase of the general research of former paper mills in the Plzeň region, all existing former paper mills were clearly identified based on a study of literature and personal research in the area as defined by the administrative districts of Sušice in the Klatovy District. Based on a study of old cadastral maps and collected archival and iconographic documentation, the paper mills were identified, then their present conditions were ascertained on site and subsequently photographically documented. It may now be concluded that from a total of eleven paper mills, five have disappeared completely (Annín, Kundratice, Lídlovy...

The first part of the article goes into detail on the construction of Strousberg's railway, which was to link industrial areas in the settlement of Františkov near the town of Zbiroh and Borek near the village of Kařez.
Layers of design: a heritage care memento in the former Josef Sochor Villa in Dvůr Králové
Ladislav Zikmund-Lender
Zprávy památkové péče 2013, 73(5):395-399
The former "old villa" of Josef Sochor in Dvůr Králové nad Labem represented a very unique interplay and gradual exterior and interior replenishment of cubist elements, national style elements and furnishings, and purist and functionalist interiors of a historical building. Even though it was primarily the interiors of the entrance, the hall with staircase, and the dining room in national style by Josef Gočár, František Kysela, and Otto Gutfreund which had been recognized thus far, the building's main value lay in the very coexistence of several distinct stylistic and temporal layers of the villa's design. All the same, the villa was insensitively...

Vladimíra Paterová
Zprávy památkové péče 2013, 73(5):400-403

In the introduction, the author addresses mental inspiration and the contemporary context that influenced the creation of the buildings; there is also...
The sacral works of Josef Břenek
Pavla Cenková
Zprávy památkové péče 2013, 73(5):404-411
Josef Břenek is considered the leading representative of the local art scene in Brno of the second and third quarter of the 19th century. He worked independently from 1844, when he became a burgher sculptor in Brno, while most of his works have been preserved in the Tišnov region. Břenek worked for a more or less permanent group of clients which also included some noble families (particularly the Serényi and Mitrovský families) and religious institutions (Benedictine Abbey in Rajhrad, Porta Coeli monastery in Předklášteří near Tišnov). In addition to this, he also accepted small orders, mainly for small parishes and villages in the Moravian countryside....

Anna Grossová
Zprávy památkové péče 2013, 73(5):412-419
Silver chambers, established as specially protected areas for storing silver and silver-plated ware and other family valuables and equipped for this purpose with designed furniture and eventually safes, were not only a privilege of the ruling families but a normal part of wealthy aristocratic households. Such a special room was set up at the end of the 19th century by the Seilern-Aspang family in the Lešná Chateau in Zlín.The family used Lešná Chateau (built between 1805-1806) as its main summer residence from the 1860's. When Count Franz of Seilern and Aspang (1859-1919) attempted to rebuild the former castle, he encountered material and constructional...
Drawings by German Nazarenes in the Sychrov Castle collections. From the vast series of drawings by German authors of the 19th century
Petr Janák
Zprávy památkové péče 2013, 73(5):420-426
The Sychrov Castle contains a valuable and extensive collection of drawings by German artists mostly from the 19th century, confiscated and brought here after World War II. The entire set was brought to Bohemia under unknown circumstances from Germany during the war, but no sooner than 1942. For this essay, a group of drawing by German representatives of Nazarenism was selected from among a large number of authors; this was a romantic artistic movement characterized by the search for the spiritual content of creation in the inspiration of Christian art of the late Gothic and early Renaissance of Italy. This stream is represented at Sychrov by the very...

Lucie Bláhová, Jana Petrová
Zprávy památkové péče 2013, 73(5):427-431
The life story of Countess Elvira Wrbna-Kaunitz takes place during the period of disintegration of the old social order, while in the background of these historical events the social and cultural motivations of the aristocracy to preserve the furniture collections of their families was changing as well. The relationship of the Countess to her collecting activities clearly shows that she regarded these objects only from a personal perspective and used them to satisfy her needs and tastes with no effort to build a family monument with a higher cultural significance. Her attempts to lose none of her personal exclusive social standing, even at the cost...
New possibilities for presenting an interior installation at Bečov Castle
Kateřina Rozinková, Tomáš Wizovský
Zprávy památkové péče 2013, 73(5):432-437
This essay assesses the hitherto results of professional research dedicated to the lower castle in Bečov nad Teplou, including archival research focused on the history of the Beaufort-Spontin family and their acquisitional activities. It presents the possibility of a future installation of the building with preliminary plans for 2015, when one of the existing visitor routes (reliquary of St. Maurus) is to be moved to another area in the complex. After this transfer, a new concept for castle interior tours will be possible which places greater emphasis on the figures of the individual owners as well as on the diversity of the presented interiors.
An image of England in the collection of drawings, prints, and photographs at the Lednice State Castle in Moravia
Petr Czajkowski
Zprávy památkové péče 2013, 73(5):438-442
Part of the collections of drawings, prints, and photographs at the State Castle in Lednice in Moravia is an extensive set of pictorial material of English origin with a total volume numbering several hundred pieces. The variability of its content shows the breadth of a collector's image through his insistent interest in England by the probable users of this collection, Princes John II and Francis I of Lichtenstein. An evaluation and interpretation of a narrow segment of the recognized portion of the collection contributed to the knowledge and understanding of their approach to visual information, moving during this period somewhere between the simple...

Veronika Cinková, Pavel Blattný, Petr Tybitancl
Zprávy památkové péče 2013, 73(5):443-447
This article deals with the method of identification of unknown family portraits as exemplified in four restored portraits at the Litomyšl Castle that have their family roots at the Potštejn Castle in Eastern Bohemia. The method is based on an inter-disciplinary cooperation of authors from the fields of restoration, art history, and heraldry. The result was to obtain as much information as possible about the examined artworks which were later compared with other pictures from the Potštejn family gallery. It was found that four restored portraits probably show relatives of the first Potštejn owners from the family of Harbuval Chamaré, John Joseph Anton...

New findings at Přimda Castle. Visual research and focus of the castle ruins.
Filip Prekop, Petr Sokol
Zprávy památkové péče 2013, 73(5):448-455
As part of revisions and subsequent updates of the focus of the Přimda ruins national cultural monument, a visual survey of the rock ridge forming the central part of the area of the castle ruins was conducted in 2012-2013, south of the surviving Romanesque donjon. Previous castle research focused mainly on the dominant residential tower. The findings related to the use of the rock ridge were as follows: traces of construction of an entrance at the upper courtyard - hewn stairs and rock beds for beams associated with the construction of a gate passing through the rocky ridge; traces of a beam structure in the northern part of the ridge (2-3 parallel...
Modification of the properties of lime mortar using traditional organic ingredients
Dagmar Michoinová
Zprávy památkové péče 2013, 73(5):456-460
The article presents selected results of research that studied the effect of natural organic substances on alterations of traditional lime mortar. The research focused on the properties of mortars with very low levels of organic ingredients, such as blood, oil, lard, soft cheese, egg yolk and egg white. Existing and newly published results show the robustness and complexity of the topic. It can therefore be reasonably expected that an understanding of the impact of natural organic additives on the properties of lime mortars should be studied by a comprehensive and singular research methodology, so that the partial results could be compared with each...

Věra Kučová
Zprávy památkové péče 2013, 73(5):461-471
There are three battlegrounds in the group of presently landscape-type heritage zones in the Czech Republic, two of which are related to the Napoleonic Wars. This article is primarily a contribution to commemorate the 200th anniversary of one of Napoleon's battles within the boundaries of the Czech Republic (1813), having taken place at Chlumec, Varvažov, and Přestanov near the city of Ústí nad Labem. There were several artistically important monuments gradually built on the battlefields, the creation of which was conceived by the leading artists of the time. This battle was part of a major series of events that helped end the Napoleon expansion...
