New findings at Přimda Castle. Visual research and focus of the castle ruins.
As part of revisions and subsequent updates of the focus of the Přimda ruins national cultural monument, a visual survey of the rock ridge forming the central part of the area of the castle ruins was conducted in 2012-2013, south of the surviving Romanesque donjon. Previous castle research focused mainly on the dominant residential tower. The findings related to the use of the rock ridge were as follows: traces of construction of an entrance at the upper courtyard - hewn stairs and rock beds for beams associated with the construction of a gate passing through the rocky ridge; traces of a beam structure in the northern part of the ridge (2-3 parallel channels across the width of the ridge - beam insert constructions of a walkway along the extinct wall running along the top of the ridge?); traces of modifications to the top of the rocky ridge - relics of rubble masonry (walls?); and artificially modified parts including rock beds for the fortification wall foundations. Traces of modified rock beds for a long-extinct fortification wall running along the eastern edge of the southern part of the ridge that separates the upper and lower courtyard. Other traces of usage of the southern part of the ridge (a structure partially embedded in the rock close to the aforementioned extinct walls, a rock bed for a stake of unknown purpose, etc.).
The visual survey of the previous geodetic documentation of the castle grounds also included the mapping out and basic cleaning of vegetation and root cover from several small relics of wall construction. The already known remains of the wall in the slope below the western edge of the yard was already proven as being composed of blocks, permitting its inclusion to the Roman phase of the castle's construction. In addition to the actual residential tower, this is probably another surviving document of Romanesque construction in the castle. Most of the other fragments of wall belong to the younger perimeter wall. This evidence of the usage of the rock ridge and relics of wall construction was photographically and geodesically documented. The result is a new focus of the castle complex that ties into earlier plans.
