Former paper mills in the Sušice area - a thesis of ongoing research

Michal Rys

As part of the ongoing initial phase of the general research of former paper mills in the Plzeň region, all existing former paper mills were clearly identified based on a study of literature and personal research in the area as defined by the administrative districts of Sušice in the Klatovy District. Based on a study of old cadastral maps and collected archival and iconographic documentation, the paper mills were identified, then their present conditions were ascertained on site and subsequently photographically documented. It may now be concluded that from a total of eleven paper mills, five have disappeared completely (Annín, Kundratice, Lídlovy Dvory, Prášily II, Radešov), two are preserved as torsos (Vatětice) or as terrain remnants (Prášily II), and in only three cases (Kolince, Petrovice and Velhartice) did the main operation buildings remain, albeit in a significantly altered structural form. This essay would like to create a foundation for a deeper understanding of the studied paper mill operations in the Sušice area as well as for the systematic research in this area of industrial heritage in the context of the entire Czech Republic. The result could then be an expert evaluation of the buildings of the paper industry in our country and the execution of appropriate steps to ensure their heritage protection.
