History and current renovation of the archeological complex of the St. Lawrence Basilica in Prague's Vyšehrad

Ivana Boháčová, Bořivoj Nechvátal

Zprávy památkové péče 2014, 74(1):3-11

In 2011 the Royal Collegiate Chapter of St. Peter and Paul at Vyšehrad acceded to the initiative of the Archeological Institute of the Czech Academy of Sciences (AV ČR, Praha, v. v. i.) to rehabilitate the archeological complex containing the Basilica of St. Lawrence (St. Vavřinec), which it manages. The complex was built during the middle 1930's, following research led by a commission for Vyšehrad research above the relics of the Basilica's main and south nave immediately south of building No. 14. The Basilica was probably founded by Vratislav II and is situated in the central part of Vyšehrad, southeast of the Basilica of St. Peter and Paul. The...

Josef Gočár rediscovered. On the findings of part of an important set of Cubist furniture

Daniela Karasová

Zprávy památkové péče 2014, 74(1):12-16

After a brief recapitulation of Gočár's early (pre-Cubist) creations, the next step is to focus on the first presentation of Cubist furniture in the exhibition organized by members of the Mánes Union of Fine Artists (Skupiny výtvarných umělců Mánes) in the Municipal House in the autumn of 1912, designed by Josef Gočár. The exhibition featured Gočár's second dining room. Josef Gočár had designed a similar dining room for his own personal use a year earlier, together with bedroom furnishings. After this came a list of exhibitions abroad in which the Czech Cubists of the Mánes group presented both their free and useful art between 1912 and 1913 in Munich...

Hotel Intercontinental in Prague. History and the present in terms of heritage preservation

Kateřina Houšková

Zprávy památkové péče 2014, 74(1):17-25

The article addresses the phenomenon of the Hotel Intercontinental in Prague, focusing mainly on the heritage extent of the building from its beginnings to the present day. It also touches on the architecture of the building in an attempt to define it and subsequently put it into the context of the period in relation to other buildings of the time. The text goes on to discuss the beginnings of its construction, the conditions under which it was built, and to a more detailed extent its authorship, which is not always clear-cut. The appearance and transformation of the interior is also briefly covered but is not the main focus of the article. It concludes...

Genealogical notes on the activities of the Schrötter bell-founding family

Václav Horák

Zprávy památkové péče 2014, 74(1):26-33

The work of the bell-founder family of Schrötter has received attention in scientific literature since the end of the 19th century. Since that time, a number of bells of the Schrötter provenance have been identified, mostly in eastern Bohemia.Thirty years ago, a comprehensive evaluation of the work of the individual members of the bell-founder family was attempted by Jiřina Belcredi, who also published a catalogue of preserved and unpreserved bells of Schrötter provenance. Even though the author brought new information at the time about the activities of this important bell-founder family, she was unable to avoid the assumption of certain mistaken...

Areas with preserved structurally significant fields in the Czech Republic

Karel Kuča

Zprávy památkové péče 2014, 74(1):34-49

The article discusses a theme so far inadequately reflected upon in heritage care practice, the theme of structurally significant prehistoric fields (plužiny) in the Czech Republic. Surface exploration of areas using orthophotomaps have shown that there are 61 areas with extraordinarily well-preserved prehistoric fields that have been preserved in the country. Altogether these are 495 cadastral territories or parts thereof, of which 309 are in Bohemia, 130 in Moravia, and 56 in Silesia. These are mostly either linear or radial ground fields whose acreage was divided by massive boundary lines including their accompanying greenspace, and therefore escaped...

Mining complexes around Zaječov, ironworks in Strašnice, and the lower smelter complex in Dobřív

David Tuma

Zprávy památkové péče 2014, 74(1):50-60

The article addresses industrial complexes, technical monuments, and buildings associated with the Strousberg Railway in the Podbrdy area. This railway was built in 1872 by the Prussian entrepreneur Bethel Henry Strousberg (1823-1884). At the time, the Zbiroh area was supposed to become the "Manchester of Bohemia", or one of the most industrialized areas of Bohemia. Strousberg's plans were halted in 1885 by his own bankruptcy. He left a number of both finished and unfinished projects behind him. Archival and field research of these projects forms the core of this article, which more closely examines the results of research of the vast undermined area...

Historic reconstruction of reinforced ropes

Zdeněk Bažant, Ladislav Klusáček

Zprávy památkové péče 2014, 74(1):61-66

The use of ropes in construction is understood as integrating them into the original structural system by using compressive stress in one or more directions, while essentially securing a favorable distribution of stress in the structure. The decisive factor is always the determination of the degree of the necessary pressure forces as well as the amount and location of the ropes, strands, or steel bars in the construction. A well designed and executed reconstruction using ropes is favorable and sensitive to the structure, and the activation of the repair is almost instantaneous.
