The Veltrusy Patriotic Park: everyday life and the message of thought

Ivo Cerman

Zprávy památkové péče 2013, 73(4):283-288

The study argues that during the reconstruction of Veltrusy Park, the park should be regarded not merely as a natural but also as a cultural monument of the Enlightenment. The park is an example of a patriotic landscape garden that was established in the Habsburg monarchy during the interim period between the wars with the Ottoman Empire and the French Revolution. These parks were intended not only to refresh the spirit by lingering in nature, but also to enlighten the mind with civic and patriotic virtues. The Veltrusy Park, as far as its decoration is concerned, is a very significant representative of this type of park, as demonstrated by our...

Zprávy památkové péče 2013, 73(4):289-295

The villa belonging to the architect Dušan Jurkovič (1868-1947), built in 1905-1906, is one of the most important buildings in Brno to be built at the beginning of the 20th century. Jurkovič always considered the wider context in his creations and was able to respond to the character of the surrounding landscape in a very sensitive way. He continued on the contemporary reflections of the form of modern living in gardens on the outskirts of cities and designed an...

Between cour d'honneur, park, and garden: Landscape modifications around Kotěra's museum building in Hradec Králové and its context

Ladislav Zikmund-Lender

Zprávy památkové péče 2013, 73(4):296-300

The article uses the example of park landscaping around the museum building in Hradec Králové to attempt to reconstruct individual layers of time of this supreme garden realization of Jan Kotěra and to attempt to recall its important intellectual context. The knowledge of the theory of an English house in a Central European environment served as inspiration on the way from a sentimental garden based on the German environment from the end of the 19th century. Kotěra thus has the possibility of moving to a rationally aesthetic position which was closest to him between 1908 and 1914. This is also the period of the high realization of the museum building,...

The evolution of the network of fishponds in the Telč cultural landscape

Jana Dostálová

Zprávy památkové péče 2013, 73(4):347-350

The network of fishponds in the Telč area was closed in by the end of the 14th century, when the Telč estates were owned by the Lords of Hradec. It was this dynasty that contributed the most to its formation. By the end of the 16th century, the Telč estates included 117 fishponds, with nearly half of them in close proximity to Telč. The fishpond network was maintained in the later periods as well, and the estate owners purchased additional ponds. By the middle of the 20th century, there were about 50 breeding ponds built and maintained around Telč. The potential held by this fishpond network was utilized by the construction of several water mills and...

Renovation of the Rothmayer Villa garden

Ladislav Zikmund-Lender

Zprávy památkové péče 2013, 73(4):359-361

This article briefly assesses the renovation of the villa and mainly of the garden from the architect and designer Otto Rothmayer (1892-1964). The idea of a substantive, even mystical connection between the very architecture of the villa with its immediate surroundings, was incorporated as an eminently intimate environment with a number of artistic elements from various historical (primarily folk) structures such as millstones, stone troughs, etc.The garden and villa were designed as a follow-up of the previous realization of the summer house of Otakar Hátlý in Káraný in the district of Prague-East. The villa's own garden in the newly built villa...
