The Zdislavice Chateau Garden at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries.

Lenka Křesadlová

The second half of the 19th century in garden art is similar to architecture in its period of returns and quests for new paths. The result was a great variety of selected approaches. A certain comfort is brought by the arrival of new trends beginning with Art Nouveau and the remarkable blossom of modern architecture in the period of the Rirst Czechoslovak Republic.
The chateau garden in Zdislavice serves as an interesting example to present the evolution of garden composition at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries in the Zlín region. The ensemble of buildings here preserved from the 1880's and 1930's also serve to document the rapid development of society and culture during this period.
In 1883, the chateau grounds in Zdislavice were acquired by the Dubský family of Třebomyslice who used it as a summer residence until 1932, when it was purchased by one of the directors of the Baťa factories in Zlín, Josef Hlavnička (1897-1943).
The garden composition underwent a fundamental transformation in the 1880's and 90's under the personal contribution of Moritz Freiherr Ebner von Eschenbach (1815-1898), the husband of Marie von Ebner-Eschenbach née Dubská of Třebomyslice (1847-1927), an important German-language writer. There is a trio of buildings in the garden preserved from this period - the Chinese pavilion, the antique temple, and the obelisk. The family of Josef Hlavnička then placed a swimming pool with a changing room building, a playing court with tribuna and a music pavilion into the gardens. There are relatively few such buildings in the Czech Republic which have survived. Many of them disappeared from chateau gardens and parks after the Second World War as "worthless" traces of the First Republic, or they gradually deteriorated due to poor maintenance. Unfortunately, the buildings in Zdislavice have been seriously damaged over the past 14 years since the chateau has fallen out of use and has not received proper maintenance.
