Minor garden architecture of Žatec buildings from the 19th and 20th centuries

Markéta Doležalová

This article, entitled "Minor garden architecture of Žatec buildings from the 19th and 20th centuries", focuses on the specific development of Žatec buildings from the turn of the century, in particular altans and other minor structures of garden architecture. Žatec is known as one of the historical towns of the Ústí nad Labem Region, spread out over the district of Louny. The historical centre of this town, closely tied in with the hop growing and brewing industries, has been protected as an urban heritage reservation and zone since the 1960's. The author examines the influence of hops production as a source of financing that allowed for the construction of interesting buildings, accompanied by elements of garden architecture. The article covers the wider context of the period as well as specific individual buildings. The objective of the article is to reveal their existence to the broader professional community and contribute to an increase of interest in these often overlooked monuments of garden art in the former Sudetenland.
