Ondřej Jakubec, Pavel Waisser

Zprávy památkové péče 2020, 80(3-4):262-270 | DOI: 10.56112/zpp.2020.3.03

Renaissance stucco offers rich possibilities for analysis, ranging from material research, through research into the relationship of this medium to other decorative processes within the complex visual language of Renaissance architecture, to iconographic and iconological studies examining the intricate contents of stucco decoration programs. The traditional art history models of research have also been revised and enriched in recent decades. Not by negating the methodologically narrow interpretations of the artistic culture of the Renaissance, however, but by expanding the range of research perspectives. The "material turn" is turning attention to...

Stucco artist Antonio Melana and artistic migration from Arogno

Jana Zapletalová

Zprávy památkové péče 2020, 80(3-4):271-281 | DOI: 10.56112/zpp.2020.3.04

From at least the 1540s to the mid-18th century, there were a large number of masters of various professions in the construction and art industries who came to Bohemia and Moravia from the Lombardy-Ticino lakes, especially the area around Lake Lugano. In the past, their creative activity was often viewed without the necessary context and understanding of the more subtle relationships of individual builders, architects, masons, sculptors, stucco artists, painters, and masters of many other arts and crafts. The article deals with the artistic migration of these inhabitants; many of them were connected by a dense network of kinship and family ties, often...

Materials on the history of stucco

Zprávy památkové péče 2020, 80(3-4):282-291 | DOI: 10.56112/zpp.2020.3.05

When we look at the term "stucco" in more detail, a very complex system of architectural surfaces comes into play. The questions thus arise: what exactly does this term mean, when did it originate, and how should it be used? When the moment comes that the technique must be replicated, these questions should be answered in detail, and a "classical" analysis of the terminology is no longer sufficient. An ongoing interdisciplinary research of Renaissance stucco has shown that certain stuccos are so specific in matter and technology that they cannot be replicated using modern materials, despite the application of modern research and analytical methods....

More on the decorations of the "Courtroom" at Bechyně Castle

Pavel Waisser

Zprávy památkové péče 2020, 80(3-4):292-303 | DOI: 10.56112/zpp.2020.3.06

The study deals with models and iconography of the "Courtroom" (Soudnice) of the Bechyně Castle. It is based on findings published by Milada Lejsková-Matyášová published in 1974 in the magazine Umění (Stucco decoration program of the Courtroom of the Bechyně Castle). The author emphasizes the finding of graphic models for eight of the twenty motifs in the vaulting of the Courtroom, namely in the neo-Stoic illustrations with the title Emblematum christianorum centuria / Cent emblemes chrestiennes (1584, 2nd edition) by the French poetess Georgette de Montenay. These are emblems with the lemmas: "VIGILATE", "VENITE", "DESIDERANS DISSOLVI", "SPECULUM...

Stucco decorative systems in mutual symbiosis. The reception of Italian designs in Moravia.

Veronika Řezníčková

Zprávy památkové péče 2020, 80(3-4):304-312 | DOI: 10.56112/zpp.2020.3.07

This study presents two specific types of geometric stucco schemes, known as "communicating frames" and "rhythmic cassettes". These have been a relatively commonly used decorative system for ceilings and vaults in Italy as well as in the Transalpine countries since the 16th century. There are a number of remarkable Italianizing examples occurring in Moravia, where both systems were innovatively combined, especially at the turn of the 16th and 17th centuries. In both cases, this is a variable system of interconnected geometric shapes that reflect the compositional decorative design of the vaults of late antiquity. While frames are characterized by the...

Renaissance extruded stucco on the example of heritage properties at the Czech/Moravian/Austrian border

Zdeněk Kovářík, Zdeňka Míchalová, Renata Tišlová

Zprávy památkové péče 2020, 80(3-4):313-329 | DOI: 10.56112/zpp.2020.3.08

Extruded stucco is a unique technique that was widely used to decorate the Renaissance interiors of heritage properties. The technique was used to decorate rich decorative frames (systems) often in connection with other decorations with figural stucco, wall and panel paintings, or sgraffito. More often, however, in Renaissance properties, extruded stucco is used in simpler formats, in terms of richness and typology, only as it closely connects with the architectural division of the property's space. These properties were usually the work of anonymous stucco workshops that operated in a certain geographical area or, for example, on structures that connected...

Veronika K. Wanková, Renata Tišlová, Peter Majoroš, Vojtěch Krajíček

Zprávy památkové péče 2020, 80(3-4):330-341 | DOI: 10.56112/zpp.2020.3.09

The article is based on new findings on stucco decoration in the Bučovice castle in Moravia. It focuses on the stucco located in the Imperial Room, the most ornate hall from the time of Jan Šembera Černohorský of Boskovice. The Imperial Room is decorated with the coat of arms of the Boskovice family, which is complemented by four stucco figures in the lunettes of the room. These full-plastic statues of Mars, Diana, Europe, and Emperor Charles V are complemented by stucco busts above the windows, painted grotesques, and five panel paintings in stucco frames on the ceiling. The painting and sculptural decorations of the individual rooms on the ground...

Aspects of heritage care and revising knowledge on the Jindřichův Hradec Rondel

Petra Hečková, Zdeněk Kovářík, Petr Kuneš

Zprávy památkové péče 2020, 80(3-4):342-353 | DOI: 10.56112/zpp.2020.3.10

The Rondel, also referred to in sources as the "Lusthaus", was the conclusion to a costly and decades-long reconstruction of Jindřichův Hradec castle in the 1690s during the reign of the last lords of Hradec. This monumental vaulted pavilion is known mainly for the late Renaissance decoration in its interior, created from a combination of stucco and terracotta and supplemented by polychrome areas, paintings, and gilding. Over the centuries, this decoration was marked by a number of adverse changes and interventions that significantly affected not only its current appearance, but also the possibilities for learning about the structure's history and...

Renaissance stucco statues of Adam and Eve at the castle in Telč

Zdeňka Míchalová, Lucie Bartůňková, Renata Tišlová

Zprávy památkové péče 2020, 80(3-4):354-365 | DOI: 10.56112/zpp.2020.3.11

The article presents new findings to the origin and transformations of the Renaissance stucco statues of Adam and Eve from the 1570s located in the niche under the arcades of the eastern wing of the main courtyard of Telč Castle. The sculptures, arranged in a small niche with painted decorations, form a clearly neglected part of the Renaissance stucco decorations in Telč. A deeper knowledge was possible thanks to interdisciplinary research and examination of the work in the broader context of other stucco works of the castle, which helped to re-evaluate the original work. There are few parallels that exist in the context of Renaissance figural stucco...

Devastated stucco in the garden pavilion of the castle in Gorzanów

Vladislava Říhová, Zuzana Křenková, Lucie Bartůňková, Pavla Jandová

Zprávy památkové péče 2020, 80(3-4):366-377 | DOI: 10.56112/zpp.2020.3.12

The residence of the Herberstein family was built in the village of Gorzanów, Poland, in the county of Kłodzko, during the 17th century. It included a composed Baroque garden that held an early Baroque garden pavilion with grottos, still preserved today. The pavilion has long attracted the interest of art historians; its architecture and decoration have been attributed to the realizations of the Prague workshop of Carlo Lurago. The pavilion's rich stucco decorations rank it alongside the decorations of the castle chapel in Náchod. Several decades of non-maintenance have left the pavilion in desolate condition. In 2017-2018, after archival, constructional-historical,...

Ownership and the protection of movable archaeological finds

Róbert Antal

Zprávy památkové péče 2020, 80(3-4):378-384 | DOI: 10.56112/zpp.2020.3.13

Movable archaeological finds are an essential part of archaeological heritage, which in most states is protected as a public interest. The extent and possibilities of the protection of finds depend on who owns them. On a theoretical level, there are 4 possible candidates that can be singled out for this role. Into the first category fall natural and legal persons; this necessary includes, for example, those who search for archaeological finds or buyers, as well as museums and archaeological organizations. The second group includes cultural groups that have a relationship to the findings based on a historical affiliation with a particular community....
