Renaissance stucco statues of Adam and Eve at the castle in Telč

The article presents new findings to the origin and transformations of the Renaissance stucco statues of Adam and Eve from the 1570s located in the niche under the arcades of the eastern wing of the main courtyard of Telč Castle. The sculptures, arranged in a small niche with painted decorations, form a clearly neglected part of the Renaissance stucco decorations in Telč. A deeper knowledge was possible thanks to interdisciplinary research and examination of the work in the broader context of other stucco works of the castle, which helped to re-evaluate the original work. There are few parallels that exist in the context of Renaissance figural stucco in Bohemia and Moravia. The extended research of the niche, recently completed, enables a similarly detailed evaluation as in the case of the already published Pluto's sleigh, another exterior stucco work in the gardens of the Telč Castle. The restorative and scientific research of the stucco sculptures and their painting modifications, as evaluated in the context of art-historical and archival information (in addition to evaluating their origin to 1572-1576), has brought hitherto unknown findings on their modern history, which has fundamentally affected their present condition and appearance. The superstructure achieved is the knowledge of the technological procedures and material properties used in the creation of the sculptures and paintings, thus bringing essential information in the broader context of research on Renaissance stucco in Central Europe. The research also clearly highlighted the poor condition of the work; it certainly deserves a restoration that would take into account all recent research and would respect the quality of the work.
