Survey of selected defunct modern period hammer mills in the Novohradské Mountains

The article provides information about the results of field reconnaissance, localization, and a survey of sites of defunct modern hammer mills in the Novohradské Mountains. Nine potential hammer mill sites were selected. Using cartographic sources, written sources, secondary literature, and an anthropogenic relief survey, six sites were definitively identified with localized hammer mill relics. The field part was focused on the identification of the individual buildings of the hammer mill sites, while the more detailed survey focused on production waste and auxiliary production facilities, such as mill runs and retention tanks. In localities where hammer mill operations could not be determined by the methods used, further research will be needed and other types of methods selected that could either provide additional information or completely disprove their existence.
The localized objects were photographically documented and described. A map of hammer mills in the Novohradské Mountains was created which shows two characteristics of the sites: the level of archaeological transformation of the structures, and the degree of localization of individual hammer mill sites / buildings.
