The important period of 1989-2014 in the development of our historic towns
In a balanced and clear method, the article addresses the development of the protection of towns and urban planning after 1989 with regard to the previous period. The introductory part of the article addresses the actual formation of institutional protection of historic town centers in the 1950's, which coincided with the establishment of the first heritage reservations and the establishment of programs for their comprehensive recovery. Following on this is a brief outline of the development of urban heritage protection up to 1989 with a focus on the development of legislation and on the most important reconstruction projects. The second part is devoted to the characteristics of the situation after 1989, particularly to the issue of increasing the number of generally protected heritage areas and to general transformations in the approach to the protection and restoration of historical sites, which is characterized on the one hand by the influx of new investments, and by the Czech Republic's accession to international conventions on the protection of monuments and landscapes on the other.
