The Venice Charter and the care of our historic cities
Karel Kibic
Zprávy památkové péče 2014, 74(3):175-183
The Venice Charter (1964) emphasized that heritage properties are not just individual buildings, but are also entire settlement units - historic cities. Czechoslovak monument care preceded the Charter in 1950 by declaring 30 town cores as heritage reservations, but the Charter also included less pronounced ("modest") buildings into the definition of heritage properties as well as other valuable towns. This became a mainstay in the proposal of the protection of other towns in this country through heritage zones, based on a categorization of towns conducted in 1973 by the author of the post. The paper focuses on the conservation of district towns with...
Protection of historic towns and villages as a continuous current international topic of heritage care in the context of the Czech lands

Zprávy památkové péče 2014, 74(3):184-192
Theoretically, the richly-based protection of historic towns and villages in the Czech lands is an extraordinary asset of Czech heritage preservation in the European context. It has also been supported by extensive thematically-oriented literature that prepared an understanding in society for the selection of settlements for legal protection. Support for the protection of valuable towns and villages can be demonstrated as early as in the works of Georg Dehio and K. F. Schinkel. An important work in this context is also the Catechism of heritage care of Max Dvořák. It was thus that the Venice Charter of ICOMOS of 1964, the 50th anniversary of which...
Culturally and historically valuable territories of the Czech Republic and the possible protection of their cultural values arising from the Building Act
Karel Kuča
Zprávy památkové péče 2014, 74(3):193-202
The article, which grew out of a research project dedicated to culturally and historically valuable territories of the Czech Republic, initially brings a balance of the number of historically protected territories in the Czech Republic which includes 570 urban and rural units, 8 archaeological heritage reservations, and 23 landscape heritage zones. It also provides information on the preparation of a number of new proposals and the revision of existing historically protected settlements in the last decade, but none of which have yet been realized. In addition, during this period there have been substantial changes in the legislative framework: the...
The development of tools of territorial heritage protection and their usefulness in an environment of Central European historic cities
Vlastislav Ouroda
Zprávy památkové péče 2014, 74(3):203-211
Historic urban structures are one of the most important components of the cultural heritage. Their historical values are, in a vast majority of cases, in constant interaction with the current developments of living residences. Methods of influencing this development towards sustainability in respect to the cultural heritage have long been studied and discussed in the professional community at the national and international levels. This article briefly reflects on the development of this issue in the Czech Republic from the end of the communist totalitarian regime to the present in the context of foreign inspiration and as it relates to the creation...
Specifics of the heritage assessment of the Baťa development in Zlín
Klára Hodaňová, Věra Horová, Karel Kuča
Zprávy památkové péče 2014, 74(3):212-219
The topic of this article is the application of the methodology of heritage assessment of buildings in the conditions of the specific modern city of the interwar period that the city of Zlín represents. Zlín was built as a direct result of the massive development of the Baťa shoe company. The entire city thus had a single investor, a fact which led to a unified urban and architectural design. Zlín architecture is characterized by a general application of gray red bricks in combination with light, visually vested construction and other structural elements. The gray brick facades, however, are very sensitive to later modifications. While in its authentic...
Urban complexes of Socialist Realism. Background, values, protection
Helga Kozelská Bencúrová, Aleš Palacký
Zprávy památkové péče 2014, 74(3):220-229
An integral part of the cultural heritage of the 20th century are the urban complexes and architectural works built in the style of a so called socialist realism in the 1950's and preserved in cities and urban areas. Their values have not been sufficiently recognized, even though they meet the general characteristics according to Article 1 of the Venice Charter and care for them corresponds to Article 1 of the section Principles and Objectives of the Washington Charter. The article deals with the starting points and principles drawn from during the period of socialist realism, and seeks out and identifies the positive aspects that this creative...
Small typologically similar urban settlements in the Malše River basin
Michaela Špinarová, Jindřich Špinar
Zprávy památkové péče 2014, 74(3):230-237
There is a significant segment of the urban heritage in the Czech Republic that consists of small towns that do not contain individual iconic architecture and perhaps are not, therefore, part of the public or broad professional awareness. This makes seeking out their similarities and regional specificities the more interesting. The ancient Cáhlovská trail leading along the Malše River from South Bohemia to Upper Austria saw the establishment of four small urban settlements in the Middle Ages which, despite their different historical developments, in the past were exceptionally similar in their urban and architectural forms. Three of them are located...
A technical survey: a tool for caring for heritage properties of garden art
Jiří Olšan, Daniel Šnejd
Zprávy památkové péče 2014, 74(3):238-245
Historic gardens and parks are an important part of the material culture of mankind. Their specific nature is also reflected in international documents on the protection of cultural heritage, and specific system tools were subsequently created for the care of this part of the cultural heritage in several countries of Western Europe and in Anglo-Saxon countries. In the Czech Republic, the situation in the field of the inventory and identification of the heritage value of garden art has long been unsatisfactory. This is why the methodology of technical surveys of historic gardens and designed landscapes has become a topic of institutional research within...
At the edge of the archaeological heritage preservation
Jaroslav Podliska, Martin Tomášek
Zprávy památkové péče 2014, 74(3):246-250
It has been 50 years since the publication of the Venice Charter, which defined archaeological research at the international level perhaps for the first time, translated as "diggings" in contemporary Czech, and affected its documentation. From today's perspective of the Czech Heritage Fund, it is certainly interesting that in the text of the Venice Charter, archaeological excavations are found in direct context with the concept of long-term care of the research of revealed objects, including structures and masonry, and their possible presentation. The archaeological method here is a direct and integral part of a comprehensive knowledge of a property...
