The "Czech" vs. "Italian" Neo-Renaissance Villa. Antonín Wiehl, Antonín Barvitius, and their patrons

Jindřich Vybíral

Zprávy památkové péče 2014, 74(2):83-90

The study is devoted to an analysis and interpretation of two important Neo-Renaissance villas - the Lippmann villa in Prague-Bubeneč (Antonín Barvitius, 1870-1870) and the Daubek villa in Brněnec (Antonín Wiehl, 1887). Although both are examples of "naturalism", the reigning style in residential architecture of the time, they represent two different visual ideologies. The first is designed in Italian style while the second is in the Czech Neo-Renaissance form. The study concludes by recalling the circumstances of the demolition of both villas.

The Evangelical Church in Přelouč in the context of contemporary architecture of the Czech ensembles of the Helvetic Confession

Petr Sládeček

Zprávy památkové péče 2014, 74(2):91-97

The Evangelical Church in Přelouč, built in 1905 by architect Jan Mareš based on the plans of the Prague professor of technology Rudolf Kříženecký, is a unique site. In this structure, the architect joined the fashionable style of the Czech Neo-Renaissance and inspiration from American "auditorium plan churches". If the Neo-Renaissance style (in its international variant) enjoyed great popularity among Czech evangelical churches since the 1880's, mainly because it was considered to be less costly than the Gothic style, then the application of American designs was an innovation. The incidence of English and American art in the environment of Czech Protestant...

Heritage care of a city in its green space. The renovation of structures and entire architectural aggregates of the 20th century in the municipal heritage zone and buffer zone of the municipal heritage reservation of Hradec Králové over the past years

Ladislav Zikmund-Lender

Zprávy památkové péče 2014, 74(2):98-108

The article attempts to highlight broader issues of the renovation of this fund, specific in many ways using concrete examples of the care of modern monuments and architectural complexes of the 20th century in the municipal heritage zone of Hradec Králové. At the same time, it endeavors to explain that it is both the consistent care and effort towards individuality and details as well as the urban elements in public space (municipal mobiliary, green space) that form a historically valuable whole. The article selectively highlights individual interventions over the last decade, both exterior and interior. It mentions the challenge of faćade color schemes,...

Heritage care of a city in the gardens. The transformations of the Zlín municipal heritage zone over the past years

Vít Jakubíček

Zprávy památkové péče 2014, 74(2):109-114

The article discusses the historical development of Zlín, the city and the factory in the gardens, which was built in the interwar period in connection with the expansion of the company Baťa. The introductory historical part highlights the constructional principles of standardized and unified architecture that followed the strict rules as laid down by the investor. In contrast, the second part is devoted to the current situation in which the former Baťa construction is now parceled among thousands of owners whose ideas about the architectural and urban values of the municipal heritage zone of Zlín and its individual cultural heritage buildings are...

"W. A. Mozart lived here". On the construction history of the Bertramka estate home in the 19th and 20th centuries

Klára Mezihoráková

Zprávy památkové péče 2014, 74(2):115-123

The former vineyard estate house No. 169 in Smíchov, known as Bertramka, is a generally well-known building due to its association with the composer Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, who resided here in the years 1787, 1789 and 1791. Today it serves as a memorial to the composer. Literature has devoted considerable attention to Bertramka since the 1st quarter of the 19th century to the present, but this has mostly focused on seeking out traces of Mozart's former stays. The approach was probably one of the reasons why a detailed evaluation of the estate's architecture as a whole is still lacking.Bertramka undoubtedly deserves a detailed art-historical study....

LiDAR and the mining landscape - terrain monuments in a "new light"

Ondřej Malina

Zprávy památkové péče 2014, 74(2):124-132

Recently, the growing interest in the mining cultural landscape has led to the nomination of several historical aggregates in the Ore Mountains (Krušné hory) to their nomination on the UNESCO World Heritage List. The protection and presentation of these monuments to montane activities is difficult to do without a detailed knowledge of the terrain relief, and the method of airborne laser scanning (ALS) represents a major breakthrough in such a knowledge. The article begins by addressing the context of this method in landscape archeology and offers a parallel with Great Britain. Next, attention is given to the basic types of the structures and to...

Renovation of the abbey chapel in the monastery in Zlatá Koruna in 2012-2013. Restoration of the murals and new findings

Zdeněk Chudárek, Petr Skalický

Zprávy památkové péče 2014, 74(2):133-138

On the first floor of the abbey house of the former Cistercian monastery in Zlatá Koruna, after the middle of the 14 th century, a visually very impressive abbey chapel was built on an octagonal floor plan. The chapel has undergone several phases of construction work in the past. No later than the second decade of the 17 th century, the floor was significantly elevated, the vaulting was partially modified (the ribs were removed and two vaulting faces were united into one). Further modifications followed in the 1670's, probably also in the second half of the 18 th century, and in the 2nd quarter of the 19 th century. Most of these stages left traces...

Surveys of Jewish cemeteries. Jewish cemeteries in Nová Cerekev

Iva Steinová

Zprávy památkové péče 2014, 74(2):139-145

The Jewish settlement in Nová Cerekev has its origins in the late 17 th century. We specifically know about the first four families from the late 17 th and early 18th century including their origin, which allows for a good idea to be created about the origins of the community. The prayer room already functioned at the time, and the cemetery was established. The Jewish cemetery is located near the synagogue and covers a quite unusual L-shape. It consists of two separate parts, the old and the new cemetery, joined by a narrow passage. The old cemetery was used for nearly three hundred years and holds 138 surviving tombstones. In 1866 a northern cemetery...

Active heritage protection of immovable and movable archeological finds through the example of the gold mining area near Netřebice. First phase of the project

Ján Čáni, Lenka Militká, Pavla Popelářová, Martin Tomášek

Zprávy památkové péče 2014, 74(2):146-150

The first part of the article deals with a general evaluation of the state of heritage monuments of a montane character in connection with their heritage protection. Although these monuments are unique archaeological documents of particular importance to the study of the land use that in the past has shaped its current form, according to the current state of knowledge it is quite evident that their protection has long been at the edge of archaeological and monumental interest. At the same time, however, this part of the heritage fund ranks among a distinctive type of endangered archaeological sites, suggesting a lack of interest among the professional...
