The Buštěhrad railway and its contribution to the development of the Žatec region

The first railway line leading to Prague (though a highly atypical line from today’s perspective) did not belong to the Olomouc-Prague Steam Railway Company (which began operating in 1845), but to its predecessor, the Prague-Lány Horsedrawn Railway. This short narrow-gauge line, designed primarily to transport timber, became the foundation for the first mine railway in Bohemia, run by the Buštěhrad Railway Company, and it later formed the spine of the company’s rail network in Central and North-West Bohemia. The line linked two large coalfields (the Kladno and Sokolov basins), provided faster access to the spas of West Bohemia, and was connected to the international rail network. It thus facilitated the rapid industrialization of the newly forming urban agglomerations, among which Žatec (Saaz) played a major role. This article presents interesting facts from the history of this line and traces its influence on the development of the Žatec region – which is now a protected landscape area.
