Eitelberger's pupils and the Olomouc Baroque

The Viennese-Olomouc book-maker and book publisher Karl Graeser and the publishing of a part of the theoretical work by Rudolf Eitelberger von Edelberg played a decisive role in the mediation of significant and important cultural stimuli in Olomouc, Eitelberger's birthplace. It brought two of Eitelberger's pupils here. The art historian Albert Ilg gave a lecture here in 1890 in which the local audience became familiarized with Baroque art, which up to then had been shunned. The architect and urban designer Camillo Sitte, to whom Graeser published his fundamental theoretical work, was intensely and systematically involved in Olomouc in the decade of 1889-1898. He developed his theoretical critique here of contemporary city construction, and in two drafts of the Olomouc regulation plan he introduced a new and distinctive concept of the construction of the disappearing fortress around the old town. Initially he proposed respecting the traces of the bastion fortress in the new built-up area, then later, among other things, focused on solving the problem of the appearance of new town squares. In addition, he promoted the Neo-Baroque monument of the Emperor Franz Joseph I and the accompanying fountain in the center of the old town, while for the fortress buildings he fought for the rescue and restoration of the late Baroque gate of Maria Theresa. Both Viennese helped the people of Olomouc - both theoretically and artistically in the area of heritage care - to establish a continuity with the rich Baroque past of their city. This link then became, from the turn of the century until the beginning of the First World War, the defining motive of the modern construction of Olomouc and the care of its heritage monuments.
