Inter-war memorial art around Jičín and the legacy of architect Václav Weinzettl

Viktor Blažek

Together with the production of the workshops of private sculptors who were active around Hořice in the second half of the 19th and early 20th centuries, the Hořice Stone Sculpture School, founded in 1884, occupies an important place with its designs and realizations. Since the beginning of its existence, the school stood out with an exceptional educational staff and received a variety of orders for figural and war monuments, reliefs, memorial plaques, and architectural work. Under the leadership of its director Ing. arch. Weinzettl Wenceslas, who led the school from 1905 to 1929, it achieved numerous successes and broad public recognition while enriching artistic circles with many good and experienced graduates. Weinzettl closely monitored the precision of his students' work under the expert guidance of renowned artists as well as the ideas of the individual works.
