First World War, heritage properties, and conservators

Vratislav Nejedlý

This article deals with the reorganization and transformation of the Central Committee for Heritage Care in Vienna (Central - Commission für Erforschung und Erhaltung der Kunst- und historischen Denkmale), which until 1918 decided on the fate of heritage properties within the borders of the present-day Czech Republic. These changes are described based on available literature, and an attempt is made to clarify them from the perspective of the evolution of heritage conservation. The result is an overview of the reorganization from 1873 until World War One. The article recalls the protagonists of the Central Committee and their goals. It generally notes the positions of Franz Ferdinand d'Este, Max Dvořák, Fortunat Schubert von Soldern, the art historians Dagobert Frey, Karl Hans Tietze, Antonín Matějček, and other colleagues of Max Dvořák in the Kunsthistorische Institut which was established at the Central Committee.
