Technically educated professionals in Imperial and Royal heritage care in the second half of the 19th century

František Schmoranz Sr. was one of the first appointed preservationists of the Imperial and Royal Central Commission for the Resarch and Preservation of Architectural Heritage Properties. His examination of the socio-professional composition of the first preservationist body led him to question the minimum representation of technicians. More detailed research revealed that the staff of the provincial construction directorates were obliged by special instruction to provide professional technical support to preservationists. Preservationists were therefore initially appointed by technicians only exceptionally: two municipal builders (including František Schmoranz Sr.) and one retired building administration official who had long been focused on archaeological research of ancient heritage properties. It was only later that, due to external circumstances, cooperation between the state technical and heritage property service was interrupted and architects became more prominent as members, preservationists, and correspondents of the Central Commission. Their practical expertise became a comparative advantage in the performance of this honorary position.
