Construction accounts of the Prague House of the Disabled (1731–1734) and their contribution to the understanding of the everyday aspect of its construction

The text deals with the preserved (and rediscovered) construction accounts of the Prague invalid hospital and their contribution to the understanding of the daily operation of the construction site of this European important military hospital. This specific written source is investigated using the methods of diplomacy and with the contribution of the knowledge of accounting history in order to show, for the correct interpretation of the content of the accounts and their effective navigation, how important it is to know the genesis of the accounts and the persons who participated in their creation. The result is a significant refinement and enrichment of the information on these accounts, including documentation of the individual who created the accounts. The analysis of the formal features of the accounts has made it possible to distinguish between core staff, their predecessors, and external staff or contractors. The analysis of the time data of the accounts shed light on the impact of holidays or the shortening of the day and the downturn in construction during the winter period on the operation of the site. The text provides many new insights into the construction accounts of the Invalidovna and thus the day-today operation of its construction. Their example is used to show the general problems of working with this specific type of written source.
