The villa of František Grossmann in Moravská Ostrava and its restoration

The study focuses on the evaluation of the heritage restoration of the villa of the builder František Grossmann, built according to his own design in 1922-1924. The restoration of the villa and the garden, completed in 2024, was based on the results of a building historical survey carried out by the authors of the article in 2009. The present article summarizes the history of the villa in the context of the development of villa architecture at that time and the architectural culture of Ostrava in the 1920s, and it presents the procedure and methods of the rehabilitation of the building which resulted from consultations with the builder and designer and combined the restoration and rehabilitation of the surviving elements with the reconstruction of the non-preserved parts and the restoration of the original layout of the house and the layout of the adjacent garden. The contribution of the study is primarily a detailed understanding of the monument and the solution of practical issues of its restoration, but moreover it also draws attention to the often complicated relationship between conservation practice and the actual implementation, or between the owner’s ideas and the possibilities and qualities of the listed building, when it is necessary to find an acceptable compromise between the requirements of the conservation and the ideas and possibilities of the builder.
