Historical orangeries in the Hradec Králové and Pardubice regions

Aleš Papáček, Jitka Svobodová

The article describes the results of a three-year research of orangeries located in the Hradec Králové and Pardubice regions. The text is based on a detailed analysis of all available materials, especially historical maps and aerial photographs, but also postcards, photographs, and other images from the collections of most museums in Hradec Králové and Pardubice region. It also draws from a wide range of documents from private collectors and the NHI's photo archive, meaning that many materials are published in this article for the first time. The drawings of Jan Antonín Venuto from the turn of the 18th and 19th centuries also served as a main basis. These utilitarian buildings have not yet received attention in literature, so references to them are very scant or entirely absent. The paper describes the most typologically important buildings; these were located in Brandýs nad Orlicí, Černíkovice, Heřmanův Městec, Choltice, Chrast, Chroustovice, Kopidlno, Miletín, and Slatiňany, and particularly preserved buildings in Častolovice, Doudleby nad Orlicí, Holovousy, Choceň, Lázně Bělohrad, Letohrad, Opočno, Ratibořice, and Zámrsk. Today, only two buildings, those located in Opočno and Ratibořice, serve their original purpose; the others have been adapted for a different function.
