Historical gardens of southern Bohemia: Current state and further perspectives for gaining archaeological information

Archaeological research methods have been used in southern Bohemia since the 1990s to understand the historical development of garden art properties. The results of such research are then used together with archival and building historical surveys in the heritage restoration of historic gardens. Large-scale archaeological excavations have been carried out in the castle gardens in Český Krumlov and Vimperk as well as in the defunct garden of the Cistercian monastery in Zlatá Koruna. Repeated smaller surveys took place in the gardens of the monastery in Vyšší Brod and in the chateau park in Červený Dvůr. Geophysical measurements were taken using non-destructive methods. The use of remote sensing methods (aerial photography) is developing promisingly. Archaeological research has mostly focused on verifying anomalies found during geophysical measurements. Water elements (tanks, fountains, water distribution) and garden structures (gazebos, orangeries, fig trees) were examined.
