Reflection of expressions of personal piety in the mobiliary funds of heritage buildings at the Kladruby Monastery, Plasy Monastery, and Horšovský Tyn Castle: Glass underpaintings
This article examines a hitherto little-known set of glass underpaintings contained in the mobiliary fund of the Horšovský Tyn Castle and Kladruby Monastery. The set contains a total of 34 underpaintings on glass which have not yet been processed. The article attempts to briefly introduce the diverse group of glass underpaintings and categorize them based on three criteria. The paintings were categorized according to the techniques used in their creation, generally according to their provenance, if possible, and finally by iconography. The last group of glass underpaintings mostly includes color underpaintings; there are several examples of the use of grisaille technology, the group also includes églomisé technology, and finally an interesting type of underpainting which combines glass underpainting with églomisé. This group of underpaintings contains an interesting range of images on glass that originate in the Cheb region, southwestern Bohemia, South Bohemia, and even in Bavaria.
