An automated technical inventory of the heritage fund as associated with the preparation of the Heritage Catalogue.

Martin Lazák

The preparation of a new software design known as the Heritage Catalogue, which has already entered the implementation phase, was the stimulus for assessing the hitherto development of heritage informatics and for a re-specification of terminological and methodological bases. An integral part of the solution of the Heritage Catalogue is a technical inventory, known in Czech as pasportizace. It is expected that this "passportization" of the heritage fund will be one of the main development potentials for heritage study (monumatika) in the coming years.
Descriptions of cultural heritage by individual interest disciplines have settled on the principles of a two-level implementation of execution and distinction based on the targeted specialization. In heritage care, these two levels are represented by the conceptual pair of inventory and documentation. The task of an inventory is primarily to unambiguously identify the given subject of cultural heritage protection. For immovable and movable properties, in the first level this presumes a data description and an overall summary description. Any documentative processing of information would lose its meaning unless it were backed up by a digital inventory based on clear rules and unless a system of basic information in the first level were connected to this inventory then developed into detail in the second level, into which the superstructure of "passportization" must then be implemented. For its effective implementation, an essential prerequisite must also be the application of rules for the classification and hierarchy of entities. Due attention is therefore devoted to the definition and explanation of these rules.
The article also explains and shows by example what we, in heritage care, should understand by the concept of "passportisation", how to approach a breakdown of the heritage fund and a modeling of data structures, and what further developments can be expected, especially with the application of 3D technologies.
