Heritage and urbanistic values of the Plzeň-Bezovka municipal heritage zone with special emphasis on the works of architect Vilém Beer
A survey of the Plzeň neighborhood of Bezovka has demonstrated it to hold architectural and heritage historical value. The survey contributed to a deeper understanding of the development of this unusual urbanistically structured city quarter as well as the causes which led to its development. New facts were discovered regarding the developmental stages of the heritage zone, and the constructional history of a selected set of buildings was documented. Special attention was devoted to the work of the Prague architect Vilém Beer and his Plzeň builders. This previously unpublished piece of research has contributed to a deeper understanding of this quality set of residential villas from the second and third decades of the 20th century. The survey showed that further research on the constructional history of Bezovka will contribute to an improved understanding and protection of the heritage and architectural values of the area as well as to a deeper understanding of the urban development of the city of Plzeň. At the same time, this survey reflects current trends in exploring this type of structure at a time when its authentic, or nearly authentic, state can frequently still be captured before being fundamentally untouched by modifications and reconstructions.
