World exceptional agricultural production of the cultural landscape

The topic of the representation of cultural landscapes on the World Heritage List was opened following the conclusions of the 16th session of the World Heritage Committee in 1992, and since then the number of such sites on the List has exceeded one hundred of a varies nature. In 2023, for the first time, the status of World Heritage Site was granted to a landscape with hop-growing plants, namely from the Czech Republic. The article puts this achievement in a broader context and uses a comparative analysis compiled during the nomination of the Žatec heritage site. The paper provides summary information on the basis of which values different landscapes representing monoculture agricultural production have become World Heritage Sites. The paper is structured according to the main crops in the productive cultural landscapes represented on the World Heritage List but also briefly introduces other landscapes with hop-growing crops. The brief characteristics of the selected landscapes may inspire a better perception of the similarities and differences of the heritage of historic rural landscapes at the national level and the search for forms of interdisciplinary cooperation for the protection of this perhaps under-appreciated cultural heritage.
