The aim of the article is to show different approaches to the renovation of vanished settlements in the Czech Republic, especially on the example of two villages in the Broumovsko Protected Landscape Area. The first part of the paper deals with the legislative context of building on the territory of the extinct settlements or their parts, it also emphasizes the importance of landscape protection, which includes the cultural and historical characteristics of the place or area. The second part of the paper focuses on the interpretation of the history of extinct settlements directly in the field using the example of Libná and Horní Adršpach. The problem of interpretation of the history of disappeared settlements has a clear overlap with the societal debate on recent history, which is then reflected in municipal policy and the activities of institutions involved in local development and protection of landscape values. The article offers inspiration to all actors involved in this process.
