One street, two names. Dolnopolní Street in Brno

The paper focuses on a standardized colony of family houses built in Brno-Maloměřice in the years 1923-1924 based on the designs of architects Karel Kotas and Bohuslav Fuchs. Both of these important protagonists of the Brno interwar architectural scene thus became involved in solving the issue of the lack of housing in the city of Brno and the search for an optimal type of modern and affordable individual housing. Using detailed archival searches, including some hitherto neglected sources, the article brings valuable and hitherto unknown knowledge on the origin and history of the colony. After a short introduction summarizing the existing publications on the topic, the text is devoted to a revision of traditional errors in the issues of authorship and typology of buildings. This is followed by a detailed construction history of the examined objects in the given locality and their careful art-historical analysis. The result is the inclusion of the colony on Dolnopolní Street in the context of several extraordinary (regarding form) groups of typical family houses arising from the creative environment of the Brno city building office as led by Jindřich Kumpošt.
